Howdy, tech-readers, it seems Apple is secretly working on the AirPower overheating problem and found a solution, according to the leaker Jon Prosser, who tweeted a photo of a prototype called ‘C68’.
Apple revealed it’s planning for AirPower way back in 2017, and this device was supposed to allow you to charge Apple Watch, AirPods and iPhone simultaneously regardless of the position you keep them on the mat.
However, the initial plan was to release it in 2018 but got canceled in 2019 due to some technical matters they faced. Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering made a statement in March 2019,
After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward
According to Prosser,
In previous prototypes, if you placed an Apple Watch on the mat alongside other devices, the entire mat would overheat, and in most cases, combust. (Not joking)
A few months back, Prosser reported that Apple was able to address this overheating problem in AirPower using fewer coils with less overlap, and by adding A11 chip into the “C68” prototype.
Prosser also added, if everything goes well, we can expect the mat to be released, between the fourth quarter of 2020 and the first quarter of 2021 with a price tag around $250.
Stay tuned and stay safe ya’ll.
